Following the U.K.’s recent controversial Supreme Court ruling, the BBC‘s newest TV series is attracting interest for bringing Paris Lees’ coming-of-age memoir to the small screen.

Set to the beat of the Y2K club scene in the early 2000s, What It Feels Like for a Girl follows 13-year-old Byron (Ellis Howard) before she becomes known as Paris, and who will do anything to escape the working-class coal mining town of Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. After becoming a teen sex worker and discovering the mesmerizing underworld of Nottingham, Byron finds belonging with “The Fallen Divas,” a “charismatic group of hedonistic misfits” and dives into self-discovery fueled by drugs, love and anarchy.

The series also stars Jake Dunn as Liam, an intimidating teen who is also secretly a sex worker. Rounding out the cast is Laquarn Lewis, Hannah Jones, Alex Thomas-Smith, Adam Ali, Laura Haddock, Hannah Walters, Calam Lynch and Michael Socha.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Dunn spoke about the U.K.’s ruling in which judges decided that the terms “woman” and “sex” in the 2010 Equality Act “refer to a biological woman and biological sex.”

“We’re living in a very scary time, and I feel excited in the sense that I’m so proud to be a part of this show,” Dunn says. “I think that the acting is nuts, and I think Ellis and Hannah and Laquarn are incredible, but it’s a very uncertain time, politically, to release a show that has, at the head of it, trans people.”
