Andor debuted its second and final season in Los Angeles on Monday night, as star Diego Luna and creator Tony Gilroy reflected on closing out the story of Cassian Andor.
The character first appeared in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which Gilroy co-wrote; then prequel series Andor arrived in 2022, now ending in 2025.
“Being in this universe and belonging to this family and being part of a project that people care so much about, it’s something very special,” Luna told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet. “I can’t compare this to any other experience in my life — it’s been 10 years of being blessed of working in something that matters to people.”
The series was originally conceived as five seasons but pivoted to two; the final installment will unfold over 12 episodes, broken down into four chapters of three episodes each. Luna explained because each season has taken them two-and-a half-years, it would have been “impossible to keep the rigor, the attention to detail that we have in this show” for five seasons.
“It’s the best that could happen, saying let’s have two seasons, let’s finish in a moment where we’re all loving what we are doing, when we’re in love with not just the material but the process,” the actor continued. “It hurts to say goodbye, but it’s better to say goodbye at this moment than when you can’t keep going.”
For his part, Gilroy admitted, “I don’t think it’s a stretch at all to say this is the most important thing I’ll ever have a chance to work on. It’s a major chunk of my life. We made eight movies in five years, that’s what we did really. That’s how we think of it” with how the episodes are broken up.
With Andor being one of Disney’s most successful Star Wars stories in recent years — season one landed eight Emmy nominations, including best drama series — there has been a fan push for Gilroy to do more in the universe. But, after the last decade of Star Wars projects, the creator said, “I think I’ve contributed enough for the time being; I think I’d like to do something else for a while. Never say never but right now I’d like to go back and direct a movie maybe.”
And as for Andor — which also stars Genevieve O’Reilly, Adria Arjona, Stellan Skarsgard, Ben Mendelsohn, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, Forest Whitaker and Benjamin Norris — Arjona promises that season two is better than season one.
“Season one I think people didn’t really know who we were as a show and after it was so well received and so well respected, I think we were just able to push every boundary,” she said. “Everyone was able to elevate their own craft and push it. It happened in the writing, it happened in the performances and I just think that the arcs of these characters, because we have to go through so much time, they’re really powerful.”
Andor season two starts streaming April 22 on Disney+, and the first episode will make its broadcast debut on ABC and FX on April 23.
