Redwood, Starring Idina Menzel, Posts Closing Notice After Tonys Snub

Redwood, starring Idina Menzel, is ending its run after being snubbed by the Tony Awards.

The musical, which opened at the Nederlander Theatre on Feb. 13, will now end its run May 18. The show, directed by Tina Landau and featuring music by Kate Diaz and lyrics by Diaz and Landau, is the first show to announce closing after the Tony nominations were announced Thursday, suggesting it was depending on the nomination and a possible win to propel it forward.

The show follows Menzel as she plays a grieving mother who goes to the woods, and climbs a giant redwood tree, to process her grief.

The show received mixed to negative reviews, but received a critic’s pick from the New York Times. Redwood has also seen its grosses trending downwards since its opening and played to 75 percent capacity last week.

At closing, the musical will have played 127 performances, including 17 preview performances.

“While we had of course hoped for a longer run, we’re incredibly grateful to have been able to tell this beautiful story for the time we’ve been given,” producers Eva Price and Caroline Kaplan said. “Redwood has been a labor of love since the very beginning of this process, and we are immensely proud of the incredible work our cast, crew, and creative team have wholeheartedly poured into this production. The themes of connection and community have really resonated with audiences, and we’ll take that with us long after the show closes on Broadway.”

In addition to Menzel, the cast of Redwood includes De’Adre Aziza, Michael Park, Zachary Noah Piser and Khaila Wilcoxon, with Daniel Brackett, John Hemphill, Veronica Otim and Jessica Phillips.
